Surely the institution did not expect the illustrator Luis Pastor to notice one of the works exhibited in these materials: a beautiful portrait of the majestic head of a lion. It was El Cid by the French painter Rosa Bonheur, painted in 1879.
«I asked Carlos G. Navarro if anyone had left that painting, which I didn’t know. And he told me that it belonged to the museum,» says Luis Pastor. «And I asked him how many women were exhibited in the 19th century part.» The answer was that there were none. Luis Pastor then began to vindicate the presence of this author, with every right, on the walls of the museum with her fantastic painting of El Cid.
Her professional recognition earned her being chosen by a very select clientele, such as kings and queens. She received the highest decorations and medals from several countries. If as a painter she was extraordinary, her private life was amazing and groundbreaking, advancing many rights for women: she obtained official permission to wear pants (something forbidden in her time) to be able to paint comfortably. And she had sentimental relationships with other women, naming her second partner, the also painter Anna Elizabeth Klumpke, heir to her fortune and legacy.
